A La Puente Holiday Season

The days have been getting colder and darker every day here in Alamosa, which means that the holidays are almost here. Most families have beloved traditions during this time of year, and the same is true for La Puente. As the holidays roll around, the La Puente staff start preparing for some of the most important events on our calendar. Whether the events are to fundraise or to bring hope to underserved community members, each event offers a unique opportunity to build community connections and spread light and warmth in the difficult winter months. So, what’s coming up for La Puente’s holiday season?

Halloween Food Drive

At La Puente, Halloween isn’t just about candy. Our Halloween food drive works a little differently than regular trick-or-treating. Instead of receiving candy, children at Alamosa Elementary partake in a costume parade and drop off canned goods that go to benefit the shelter and food bank. This day of fun also serves as an educational moment; kids get to learn about the importance of sharing and the impacts of food insecurity in their community.

Thanksgiving at the Shelter

November 23rd

After months of collecting donations, the holiday season kicks off with a Thanksgiving celebration at the Shelter. All community members are invited to share a Thanksgiving feast with La Puente. With decorations, live music, and delicious food cooked by generous volunteers, the Thanksgiving meal is one of the most memorable events of the year!. Not only that, but it’s also one of the best volunteer opportunities on La Puente’s calendar. We are currently looking for volunteers of every kind. Preparing a dish, serving food, and donating are just some of the ways to be a part of La Puente’s Thanksgiving! Contact Claire at ckennis@lapuente.net to learn more about volunteering.

Share the Magic Gala

December 2nd

In collaboration with the Adams State Theatre Department, La Puente invites our donors to enjoy a night of socializing, learning about La Puente’s mission, and enjoying a play. More than an exciting event, Share the Magic is one of La Puente’s biggest fundraisers for unrestricted funds. The money raised on just one night goes to fund services and programs for the entire next year. This December, Adams State students will be performing The Play that goes Wrong, a one-act comedy play, for attendees. Contact Wilson at development@lapuente.net if you’d like to purchase a ticket to attend.

La Puente Christmas Party

December 16th

A calendar of holiday celebrations would not be complete without a Christmas party! The week before Christmas, La Puente staff and volunteers come together to organize a special celebration, which is enjoyed by shelter residents, community members, staff, and volunteers alike! This joyful celebration is  filled with gifts, food, and festive activities. Every single guest receives a  present, children can visit with Santa Claus, and everyone gets to take part in the holiday spirit while eating cookies and drinking hot chocolate. The La Puente Christmas Party is a heartwarming reminder of the power of community and generosity during the holiday season.

Volunteers are always welcome to help decorate, wrap presents , or organize activities for the party. Reach out to Amber Mitts if you are interested in helping out: director.volcoor@lapuente.net.

La Puente’s holiday schedule is filled with fun and meaningful events that provide hope and warmth to those who may not have it otherwise. Whether you’re interested in lending a helping hand to these events or just want to attend and share the holiday spirit, our doors are open to everyone.
