Program Highlight: PALS
It’s been a while since we’ve done a program highlight but we wanted to highlight this program again since they are hosting an exciting event! Each program focuses on a different aspect and is uniquely important, and this week we are focusing on PALS, our Children’s Program. We will take a good look at what this program does for our community as well as what they are doing right now.
PALS Talent Show
This blog post is coming at a great time. PALS is hosting one of their two annual events. The children put these programs together for the community to showcase their talents and hard work. This event happens this week!! Come to the Society Hall at 400 Ross Ave. at 5:30 pm on Friday, July 21st to see the kids perform talents that are outta this world!
A Little Bit of Background:
PALS Children’s Program is a referral-based, licensed after-school and summer program for children 5 to 9 years old who are combating trauma or instability in their home lives. Geared to the needs and interests of each child, PALS focuses on social, emotional, and behavioral growth through an exploratory learning environment aimed to cultivate their sense of self, family, and community.
Through activities and experiences, PALS encourages a child’s personal growth and self-expression. Activities include access to academic tutoring, life and social skills coaching, community service, artistic expression, field trips, health and first aid classes, cooking and dance lessons, library visits, outdoor adventures, and other opportunities with community partners.
As a result of difficult economic circumstances in the San Luis Valley, many families struggle with food insecurity and finding stable, affordable housing. Growing up in conditions of poverty can lead to difficult physical or emotional circumstances, which may become the root of other traumas. Without support, children experiencing trauma have an increased risk of mental health disorders, substance abuse and other life-shortening illnesses and issues. This also impacts their education and occupational opportunities. Through PALS, children are able to overcome these challenges.
PALS staff members work closely with parents, teachers, and caseworkers to serve each child in the best way possible so they can grow to reach their potential. Without early interventions, poverty, and trauma may have life-long impacts on a child’s health, well-being, and future. Children who experience trauma have a need for extra support and attention during their formative years to overcome these challenges and to ensure a brighter future.
Why PALS Matters:
PALS is distinctive; it’s not just a simple after-school program. Instead, PALS helps children look at life through different lenses by building trust through relationships. It gives the kids a chance to make choices & encourages active participation by giving out responsibilities & rewards.
PALS is an important part of the community because it focuses on the next generation. If we can support and encourage the future, we have hope for a brighter tomorrow.
Why The Talent Show Matters:
One of these experiences is the annual talent show that the children produce. This show gives the kids a chance to explore their creative passions in a safe environment. Sometimes kids struggle with self-worth/self-esteem as a byproduct of trauma. This show encourages the kids to explore new areas of interest and expand their horizons.
We have all sorts of acts, from science experiments to playing instruments, singing, dancing, painting, and more! Not only is it a safe environment for the kids, but it is a wonderful way to bring the community together for a fun event and show the kids some love.
Please join us in celebrating with the PALS kids as they show off their talents.
