π¨οΈ In the winter of 1978, two unhoused individuals lost their lives to hypothermia in Alamosa. Sister Mary Angelo Lobato knew something had to change, and she took action. π
With just $25 and the help of five dedicated locals, La Puente Home was born.
π By 1982, the shelter opened its doors, becoming one of the first rural homeless shelters in the nation.
Today, La Puente is more than just a shelter. We offer:
π Food through the Food Bank Network of the San Luis Valley
π‘ Rental assistance via our Crisis Prevention Office
πΆ Survival resources for unsheltered individuals through Street Outreach
π§ Youth support through our PALS Childrenβs Program
π Clothing & housewares at ReThreads Free Store
π± Fresh produce from the VEGI Community Gardens
π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ Family support through Adelante services
ποΈ A safe place to stay at our Community Shelter for those who are unhoused
From that first cold night to now, La Puente has remained committed to one mission: assisting individuals and families affected by poverty so they can stabilize, heal, strengthen, and ultimately thrive.
